The Soil of the Heart: A Reflection Matthew 13
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the familiar Parable of the Sower. A farmer generously scatters seed across different kinds of ground. The seed is the same in every case, but the results are very different because of the condition of the soil. Jesus later explains that the seed represents the Word of God, while the soils represent the different ways people receive it.
The remarkable feature of the parable of the Sower is the generosity with which he sows his seeds. God does not ration his grace. He continues to sow his word into every heart, regardless of its condition, always hoping for a harvest. The question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are allowing his word to take root within us.
As we reflect on this Gospel, Jesus invites each of us to examine the condition of our own hearts. Are there hardened places that need to be softened? Are there rocky areas where our faith lacks depth? Are there thorns that need to be cleared away? God is always at work cultivating our hearts so that his word may flourish and bear abundant fruit.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you continually sow the seed of your word into our hearts. Remove whatever that chokes our faith and may your word be rooted in our hearts, hearts that are open, faithful, and fruitful. Amen.
