The Omnipresent God: A Reflection

Genesis 28:10–22 finds Jacob at one of the lowest points in his life. Fleeing from his brother after deceiving him, he is alone, afraid, and uncertain about the future. Using a stone for a pillow, he falls asleep in the wilderness. It is there in the wilderness, not in a temple, but in a place of fear, failure and anxiety that the Omnipresent God reveals Himself and promises, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” (Genesis 28:15). As Psalm 139 reminds us, there is nowhere we can go beyond God’s presence. He meets us in our wilderness, our failures, and our uncertainty.

When Jacob awakes, he realizes that God had been with him all along. God’s faithfulness did not depend on Jacob’s perfection but on His own unchanging love. Jacob’s response is worship, gratitude, and renewed commitment, his revelation of the ladder ultimately points to Jesus Christ (John 1:51), who is the bridge between us and God and assures us that God is always with us. 

Wherever you find yourself today, remember that the God of Bethel, the Omnipresent God is with you. His presence is constant, His promises are sure, and His grace is greater than our failures.
