“Were Not Our Hearts Burning?” – In this passage, two disciples walk away from Jerusalem, weighed down by confusion and disappointment after the crucifixion of Jesus. They had hoped He was the one to redeem God’s people—but now, everything seems lost. Their journey to Emmaus becomes a journey through doubt.
What’s striking is this: Jesus walks with them, but they don’t recognize Him.
This speaks deeply to our own lives. There are moments when we feel abandoned, when prayers seem unanswered, and hope feels distant. Like the disciples, we may be walking away from the place where God is at work—yet Jesus is still walking beside us.
Faith is rekindled not through spectacle, but through understanding and presence.
This passage invites us to reflect: Where might I be walking away in disappointment? Could Jesus already be walking beside me, even if I don’t see Him? Do I take time to recognize Him—in Scripture, in others, in daily life?
Prayer: Loving God, Walk with me now, in my own journey especially in moments when I feel lost, discouraged, or uncertain. Speak to my heart through Your Word, and let it burn within me with truth and hope. Be my companion, my guide, and my peace. Amen.
