Sunday’s Reflection: Feast of the Creator
The celebration of the Season of Creation began in 1989 when Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I established September 1 as a Day of Prayer for Creation for the Orthodox Church. The World Council of Churches extended the celebration to Oct 4th the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. In 2019, The Anglican Church of Canada adopted the Season of Creation, beginning September 1st and continuing through to October 4, the Feast of St. Francis, “as an annual season of prayer, education and action to protect the gift of God’s creation.” As part of this ecumenical movement the General Synod of 2025 passed Resolution #A122, resolving that the Feast of the Creator be adopted as a Major Feast within the liturgical calendar of The Anglican Church of Canada, to be celebrated on September 1, transferrable to a Sunday within the Season of Creation.
This year, the theme for the Season is “Living Water.” It explores Ezekiel 47:9 and 12 as a powerful biblical vision of hope and ecological healing. Set amid exile and loss, the image of living water flowing from God’s sanctuary reveals divine healing that renews land, water, biodiversity, and human responsibility towards the whole creation.
What does creation today reveal to me about God? When was the last time I felt a deep sense of wonder or gratitude for the natural world? Do I see creation as something to use, or as a gift entrusted to our care?
Prayer: Creator, our of your abundant love all things live and move and have their being. May we, who have harmed your creation, turn to you in the power of your grace, that seasons of healing and restoration may come to our island home.
