Remembrance Sunday: A Reflection
“Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:17–18
It is yet another Remembrance Sunday, a time to pause and reflect with gratitude on the sacrifices and labours of our heroes past. As we wear red, we see names engraved on war memorials, a symbol of lives laid down in the pursuit of peace and freedom. We reflect also on our departed loved ones, family and church members who paid a great price to establish what we enjoy today.
In 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, St. Paul enjoins us not to grieve as those without hope. Our Christian hope rests in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who conquered death and promised eternal life. Although death brings sorrow and separation, our faith assures us that death does not have the final word.
Today, we look back with gratitude and look forward with hope and a renewed commitment to peace and healing. In a world still wounded by wars, violence and division, we are called to be instruments of God’s healing.
Prayer: Jehovah Rapha, grant rest to the departed, comfort those who mourn, heal the broken-hearted and guide our feet in the way of peace. May our remembrance inspire gratitude, strengthen our hope, and renew our commitment to building a peaceful and compassionate world.
Amen.
