Fulfilling Our Civic Duties as Christians

“Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” –  Matthew 22:21

Our Christian faith and commitment do not excuse us from fulfilling our civic responsibilities; rather, they should inspire us to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society. In Matthew 22:15–22, Jesus teaches us that our responsibilities as Christians extend beyond the walls of the Church. We are not only citizens of heaven but also members of earthly communities, called to contribute to the common good. Hence, Jesus declares, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Fulfilling our civic duties means paying taxes honestly, respecting just laws, participating responsibly in democratic processes, protecting public resources, and promoting peace, justice, and the well-being of others. These responsibilities are not separate from our Christian faith; they are practical expressions of our love for our neighbours.

We are also reminded that our ultimate allegiance belongs to God. While Caesar’s image was stamped on the coin, God’s image is imprinted on every human being. Therefore, we owe God our worship, obedience, love, and our very lives.

As Christians, we are called to be responsible citizens without compromising our faith. When earthly demands conflict with God’s commandments, our loyalty to God must prevail.

Question for Reflection: How can I inspire others, through my words and actions, to become responsible and law-abiding citizens?
