Hosanna: A Reflection on Matthew 21: 1-11

The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem reveals His messiahship and royal identity in fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. By riding on a colt rather than a horse, Jesus shows that He is a King who reigns in humility, peace, and righteousness.

Although His reign is not marked by political power or force, Jesus demonstrates holy anger in cleansing the temple. In doing so, He reveals that He came to transform the human heart and to restore true worship. Our worship must not be transactional, but sincere and sacrificial.

The crowds welcomed Him with shouts of “Hosanna,” meaning ‘save now’ reflecting their longing for the anointed one, the Messiah who will liberate his people. Yet many did not fully understand the kind of King He was. In a painful twist, some of those same voices would later shout, “Crucify Him.” This reminds us how easily human praise can fade when God’s ways do not match human expectations.

Reflecting on our own response to Christ. Do we welcome Him only in moments of joy, or do we remain faithful even when the path is difficult?

May we open our hearts to Him and allow our lives to reflect His peace, humility, and righteousness, as we sing with faith: “Hosanna in the highest.” Amen!
