The Baptism of the Lord: Christian baptism is rooted in the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is an incorporation into Christ; it is an entry into the New Covenant between God and God’s people. Baptism is the sign of new life through Jesus Christ. It unites the one baptized with Christ and with his people. Baptism means participating in the life, mission and ministry of the church.
The practice of believers’ baptism emphasizes the explicit confession of the person who responds to the grace of God in and through the community of faith and who seeks baptism. Baptismal ministry is discipleship where all baptized share in Christ’s identity and mission. Baptismal ministry maintains that the calling of each person is of equal worth and essential for the fullness of mission—that is, to restore all people to unity with God.
On the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, this promise can be heard as the church’s steady invitation: The beloved Son is revealed for the many, the Spirit is given for the healing of the world, and the Gospel’s reach is shown to be as wide as God’s mercy.

Prayer: Prayer: God, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, mark us with your image and raise us to live our baptismal vows empowered by the Holy Spirit and the example of Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen. (Pray without Ceasing, The A.C.C.)
